Thomas Bradney (John Bradney’s grandfather) was listed as a pauper on the christening entries of his son Isaac on
November 9, 1788, and his son Thomas on June 17, 1792.5  While in Pontesbury the Bradney family lived from hand to
mouth and relied on the good health of the wage-earning members of the family for their day to day necessities.

Eli died in his 70th year from injuries received a few weeks earlier in a mine near that place.  It appears that Isaac was living in the
household of Eli at the time of the death of the latter.  He continued to live with Mary, Eli’s wife.  Isaac suffered from shortness of breath
which may indicate that he was suffering from miner’s consumption or black lung disease.
