Steeraway Wellington Telford
My Kitson (or Kidson) and Dabbs relatives were
born in Steeraway in Wellington in the 1890’s to 1900’s. My Grandmother
Alice Emma Kitson grew up there, with her brothers Edward, Jack
and William and sisters Minnie (twin of Alice), Sarah Jane, Esther
and Bessie (Elizabeth).
Their parents were William Kitson (born Monkhopton
Bridgenorth) and Eliza Dabbs who also grew up in Steeraway with
parents John and Sarah.

Above is my father Eric Jones on
the left, his brother Dennis Allan (known as Allan) and their
mother Alice Emma Jones (Nee Kitson) in front of the cottage at
Steeraway where she grew up and her parents still lived.

Above is a picture of the cottage on its own.

The cottage in 2005, now called Rose Cottage,
still a very beautiful property!
Im 29 so I don’t remember any of the following
it is just what I have found out whilst researching my tree so
any corrections or additions would be most welcome.
I understand there were Limestone mine workings
in Steeraway and I believe there to be a quarry? My father remembers
going there with his father Frederick Gordon Jones.
In 1841 approximately 100 men and 20 boys were
employed there.
The mine in Steeraway was owned by Steeraway
Lime Co. In 1896 and the agent is listed as John O Owen at that
time there were 7 workers underground and 3 on the surface. In
1908 it was called “Hatch Level” and owned by the same company,
with 5 workers below and one above and the agent was a J Goodall.
Apparently this mining continued into 1918, at that time the agent
was still J Goodall and the owner is listed as a J Cetti from
Wellington. The operation had been scaled down and there were
3 workers below ground and none above.
This area fascinates me, as I have taken a
few drives into the area. I have been into Lime Kiln woods and
seen a limekiln these are all at the end of Limekiln lane just
off Bayley road in Arleston.
My family according to the 1891 census occupied
two properties in the aree, one was where Edward Kitson my Great
Great grandfather lived, he was widowed by then, and the other
was where my great grandfather William Kitson lived.
The 1881 census for them reads as follows (courtesy
